Happy New Year

With a smile, A spirit of giving, A sense of humanity, A pledge to spread Peace and Happiness...

What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That's not been said a thousand times?
The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.
We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.
We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.
We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our prides, we sheet our dead.
We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden of a year.

Divided By God

Headline Prompt:  Divided by God:  What does "God" mean to you?  How do you access"God" or the divine or the sacred in your life?
Color Prompt:
Metallics - gold, silver, copper, bronze, or all of them!
Quote Prompt:
"This is my simple religion.  There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy.  Our own brain, our own heart, is our temple; the philosophy is kindness."  The Dalai Lama

I believe. I believe in the super power - the omnipotent and the omnipresent! It's our - each person's(believer or non believer) - faith  that helps and guides us to move forward in life. I feel His presence whenever I am in dire need of it...it could be in the form of a friend, a neighbour, an incident or even a statement from someone or somewhere. It could come from anywhere...the right thing at the right time; we just need to be open to it.

I believe that heaven and hell are right here and whatever we sow we reap before we make our final exit. So be aware of one's Karma. I just love to feel the light...I believe that there is that light in everyone of us; a tiny bit of energy that connects us with the cosmic power and we all are connected with invisible strings attached. Some see through it and some are unaware of it - but it's there all the same! So it is so awfully terrible when people trick, argue, cheat, fight and above all kill people so heartlessly just like some twigs or grass in the name of colour, caste, race, customs, cultures, religion and God.

I hope and pray that all the negative energies, negative forces, negative thoughts is shifted to positive ones and the world just becomes a better and peaceful place to live in harmony.

Acrylics (Only metallics - silver, copper, bronze and silver) and Pen - 7x5 inches

Close up

I have chosen one of the famous temples in South India which is also the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram, of the state, Kerala, I hail from. Thiruvananthapuram - Thiru, Anantha, Puram - The sacred abode of Lord Anantha Padmanabha, was in the news recently for the riches(would be a tiny word...as its billions of dollars worth making it to be the richest temple in the world perhaps after the final estimate of its inventory) it contained for centuries. It stands as a symbol of the treasures hidden in it for years and I take that metaphorically just as we, humans, fail to understand or neglect the treasures hidden in us...It is said that all the answers lie within, one just has to SEE it. That is where meditation helps according to our scriptures. So delve within, spend time with yourself and you will get to know the answer to the most poignant question of all times - 'Who am I?'

Lifelong Fan

Headline Prompt:  Lifelong Fan:  What or who have you consistently valued or looked up to in your life?  What lessons have you learned from people you admire?
Color Prompt:  Your favorite color now or from childhood or both!
Quote Prompt: "Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator; but among those whom I love, I can:  all of them make me laugh."  W.H.Auden

Actually I couldn't make any new one so I am posting a picture I had done before. I have been a life long fan of my mom. Whatever I am today is my mom's love and prayers. I know she had envisioned something more than this but name it on circumstances or something else I haven't reached there yet and I would like to some day! I think almost everything has been said about my feeling for my mom in my last post :)

I also would like to add that Friends have also been an integral part of my life. Its difficult to name one but there have been many who in some way or the other have influenced and inspired me, sometimes even the hard way. I am extremely sincere to them and fond of each one of them. I stand with them in their hour of need and along the way I expect that in return.

Teachers, they are my greatest ideals! Each one of them, their words of wisdom and their classes have all inspired me immensely. I am still in touch even with my Primary school teachers. Their influence has been great!

There are other important matters in life I have been fan about...like babies, kittens, puppies, granmas n granpas...  :) Perhaps my list would just continue....

Security - FFF Challenge 4

Fall Fearless & Fly Challenge 4
Headline Prompt:  Security:  What makes you feel safe and secure?  What rattles your sense of security?  Where do you go for comfort and refuge?
Color Prompt:
Cool colors (blues, greens, violets, etc.)
Quote Prompt: You can't make a place for yourself in the sun if you keep taking refuge under the family tree.  Helen Keller
Security - Come to think of it there's a lot that can be said about it! Lot of factors!
For me, as for any lady/girl, a sense of security is part and parcel of life....perhaps one of the most important criteria. It could be from a smallest thing to one of the biggest in life... I feel my home, my place, my family especially my mom gives a firm sense of security. Speaking about my mom, she is a simple person who has spent all her life for her family which not only includes my dad, bro and me but also her parents, her siblings and the everyone else. She is one of the self-less persons I have seen in my entire life! She can identify and sense a person with her intuition, and whatever she has said has always come true. All the same she never expresses any negative feeling or harbour any grudge against anyone. It is only when she reaches the tip of her endurance does she react (which I have felt has it's disadvantages too!) I am very close to her and I think I am following that tradition with my daughter as well. The mother-daughter relationship has a strong foothold in my life; we are very close knit. So my inspiration, my comfort, my refuge has always been my mom. Similarly I have come across a lot of people who feel that they feel more secure where they reside. I have been here in Dubai for 11 years now but it's always my town, my place that gives me a sense of stability and security. I can not state the reason but that is just so. As soon as I reach there, it's like 'MY PLACE'!

Misunderstandings rattles me...you, with all your goodwill and sense of positivity work on any relationship, any situation and when it backfires without any rhyme or reason, it bewilders me. I believe in the positivity of people...the energy that we speak of...but even after all your deepest, sincere and heartfelt actions people mistake you; that is beyond endurance. I think people often mistake tolerance for cowardice. It's just that we are tolerating; it is not out of cowardice. It's just that we don't wish to hurt the feelings of our near and dear ones. It's said that once the stone is thrown it can never be taken back or it's like the nail, once nailed it leaves a scar.

If you have read it so far, then thanks...I am usually not the one for long posts! But this topic opened me up, I should say!

So here's my interpretation of Security:

Diwali Crafts

Few Diwali items that I created over the past couple of weeks...I had them exhibited along with my paintings at ARTE Souq. It's a tedious process though to make these items as there will be beads, stones, sequins, diyas etc etc etc spread all over the place and it will continue to be so until you finish it! But the result is satisfying when you hear people say they loved it...just like paintings! Yes, I had a small Home Fair for the very time and it went well than I expected...thanks to some loyal friends and well wishers :D A huge thanks each one of them!!!!

Here's a sneak peek...hope you like it...in case you did, you can leave me a comment. It's a morale booster! You could even join in my Morale Boosters list :D

Triumphs and Defeats - FFF Challenge

Headline Prompt:  Triumphs and Defeats:  What do you see as your greatest triumphs or defeats?  What have they taught you?  Which have you learned more from?
Color Prompt:
Black and white
Quote Prompt:
Not in the clamor of the crowded street, not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng, but in ourselves, are triumph and defeat.  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

This has been a great challenge to evaluate and assess ourselves. Perhaps my greatest is yet to come all the same I have had my moments where I have felt both.  Defeats, I have always found my way out and being a self inspiring and positive person I have worked it out even if I have taken some extra time at times! Triumphs I have had and yet I haven't let that affect me more than it should (may be I haven't had it BIG enough :) )  I personally feel whether it's triumph or defeat everyone has their share and one should never allow it to overpower us. Each experience is a Lesson from which one gains innumerably!

You can see my interpretation here:
Flowers for triumph and tears for defeat...one could have a phase of triumph or defeat alone and/or a mix of both. The circles are the opportunities and chances that we grab and miss as they slide away while the blocks are the physical/mental blocks which could be circumstances, people, drained out period etc. The eye is the all seeing, all realizing, omnipresent eye that helps you to see yourself and others at the same time. It helps one to be the judge of the situation and learn from the experience. In a blink the situation could change and everything depends on one's perception - positive or negative, triumph or defeat!

As I am a lover of colours, it was difficult not to paint! But all the same I loved to see how it comes out putting aside my limitations and inhibitions.

Please do leave your valuable comments so that I can have an 'eye' it :)

Lord Ganesha - Kerala Mural

Lord Ganesha is considered as the Lord of wisdom and one who erases all obstacles. He is the Lord with an elephant head. He has two wives, Riddhi (wealth and prosperity) and Siddhi (intellectual and spiritual powers). Once I happened to hear Dr. Gopalakrishnan's (Director of Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage - IISH)  scientific explanation of Lord Ganesha's concept. He mentioned an interesting aspect that the head of the lord is almost the same shape of the brain and medulla oblongata which obviously is the seat of wisdom of any person. In order to make the common man understand the different concepts, yogis and the intectualls resort to symbolic concepts to make a connection and to lead them (the common man) to spirituality.

This is a Kerala mural painting done with watercolour and the image is a googled one. I am unaware of the actual creator as in the case of murals, the designs and patterns are basically in vogue through centuries... If you wish to see my own creations with the Kerala mural procedures applied, you can click here and here.

Can you see the pattern on Ganesha's head and trunk area?

Taking a Chance

First of all, thank you my dear friends and visitors for taking time and leaving a comment. It means a lot to me! I appreciate it a lot :) Also, to all my new followers a big welcome and a thank you. Hope you will like and love visiting Hues n Shades :)

This week's prompt is:

Headline Prompt: Taking a Chance: When did you take a chance or a leap of faith? How did it turn out? What did you learn?
Color Prompt: What color do you like least? Use it!
Quote Prompt: "Don't refuse to go on an occasional wild goose chase -- that's what wild geese are for." Anonymous
I had to do this last minute as I have lot of things going on right now. But surely I didn't want to miss this as well. So here's my interpretation.

Its always a dilemma to take a risk. When I had to leave a full time job because of few health issues I was totally frustrated. I had my downs and as they say when there’s none to help…we have to help ourselves… I had to do exactly that. I took to my hobby, my passion and turned it to a full time job. I am happy about it. I dream and aspire to secure a fulfilling space in the art world. My focus remains that but there are those troubled times when you wish for an anchor and just remain calm and still which most of the times, I struggle with.
As for the colours, as my blog name suggests I love each and every hue…I just can’t choose one from the other. But there are a few colours which I tend to use less…like shades of brown, purple, violet and maroon …so they are my choice here.

DIY @ Craftsia

Isn't it always nice when you are invited to a friend's place or some place that has great stuff. Its true for real and virtual world alike. I had been invited, likewise, to a really nice place - Craftsia run by
the owner of Indusladies, Jey. The invitatio however came from Ms. Vandana Rajesh who takes care of the content of the site. Its an Indian online market place for unique handmade items. You can buy or sell wonderful pieces of art here.
I have done a guest post for Vandana on acrylic painting...it would be really great if you could spare some time and check it out...would be even greater if you could actually try it out :)
Here's an excerpt:
"Paintings are a beautiful work of art that can add a magical touch to almost any space. Having a painting adorn your wall can be an absolutely satisfying experience and can add immense value to your home décor and ambience. As part of Craftsia DIY Wednesdays we bring you a tutorial on how to make an acrylic painting by guest blogger Deepa Gopal Sunil. Now, you can make a painting and enjoy the compliments that come your way..."

Gajalakshmi (Kalamkari Painting)

Gajalakshmi, 7*10 inches,
Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Watercolour paper

Kalamkari or Qalamkari is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile, produced in parts of India. The word is derived from the Persian words kalam (pen) and kari (craftmanship), meaning drawing with a pen.
The art of painting using organic dyes on cloth was popular in several parts of India, but this style of Kalamkari flourished at Kalahasti (80 miles north of Chennai) and at Masulipatnam (200 miles east of Hyderabad) in Andra Pradhesh.
The Kalamkari tradition chiefly consists of scenes from Hindu mythology. Figures of deities with rich border embellishments were created for the temples. In Masulipatnam, the weavers were involved in the block printing art, while at Kalahasti, the Balojas (a caste involved in making bangles) took to this art.

Owing to Muslim rule in Golconda, the Masulipatnam Kalamkari was influenced by Persian motifs & designs, widely adapted to suit their taste. The outlines and main features are done using hand carved blocks. The finer details are later done using the pen. Under the British rule the designs as well as the end use of the fabric differed - for garments as well as furnishings. During this period floral designs were popular. The artisans were made to create even portraits of English men.
The Kalahasti tradition which developed in the temple region mostly concentrated on themes form Hindu mythology, epics (Ramayana, Mahabharatha), images of Gods and heroes.
The artists use a bamboo or date palm stick pointed at one end with a bundle of fine hair attached to this pointed end to serve as the brush or pen.
The dyes are obtained by extracting colours form parts of plants - roots, leaves along with mineral salts of iron, tin, copper, alum, etc., which are used as mordants.

Karrupur is a style of Kalamkari that developed in the Thanjavur region during the Maratha rule. The Kalamkari work was a further embellishment to the gold brocade work in the woven fabric, which was used as sarees & dhotis by the royal family during the period of Raja Sarfoji and later Raja Shivaji.

After independence of India, the Handicrafts Development Board took up the task of reviving this art, which had dwindled due to lack of buyers. This style owes its present status to Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhayay who popularised the art as the first Chairperson of the All India Handicrafts Board.

The specialty is that the finished products are mellow. Bright colours are used but the finish is not gaudy. The fabric looks better and better with further washing, with the designs standing out even better against the background.

Parineeta

Parineeta (Married woman) series is inspired from the Parineeta movie only in name. I just love the sound of it and thought of creating women characters sensitive yet bold, mild yet firm, timid yet self-assured...all at the same time!
A wedlock brings out qualities that a woman may never have realized/recognized that she possessed. It brings out facets or nuances of her nature that reveals more to herself than others. She can do and undo anything she wishes to... I mean the positive ones unlike the soaps that always portray women in almost all the negative attributes one can imagine!
It is exactly for the same reason that we worship Goddess whether it be Saraswathi (Goddess of Wisdom), Parvathy (Goddess of Power) or Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity)...or the mightier Durga (the Invincible)...different aspects of the same omnipresent and omnipotent lord.
Doesn't it make us, women, a responsible soul in every sense to mould, nuture and enrich the family she lives in?

DIY (Guest Post) in Rangiru

Here's a quick post, actually a guest post in Rangiru. Thank you Saurabh for patiently waiting for this post to reach you. It's an honour and as I said I was completely excited to create and compile it.

"What I have tried here is an amalgamation of Warli and Madhubani style of art. Warli and Madhubani are two traditional forms of art that celebrates life in all its aspects. In a world where people have forgotten even to smile, such art forms can help recreate joy and rejuvenate mankind. All you need to have is the love for life and the time to pause. These art forms depict the association of man with nature."

This is how it goes... It's a tutorial, please do visit and do not forget to share what you feel about it.

I am Back!

Hello My Friends

Let me begin with an apology for disappearing unexpectedly. I have my reasons! I had been on vacation...flew to my homeland where I thought I would connect with you all atleast with an 'I am on Vacation' post...toured Goa for a week and was food poisoned...acquired severe large intestine infection and was hospitalized for around a week...lost 5 kgs and am taking a whole lot of time to recuperate as I am on food restriction (I missed out on mom's & MIL's cusine this time!)and medicines for 6 weeks...that was until the day before my departure from India. I am back but still feeling sick very often...diagnosed with fibromyalgia - fancy name, right! (apart from some other stuff which was being diagnosed earlier) Yet, we had to make our annual visits to certain places which was unavoidable.

The school has begun with loads of projects and I am trying to keep my head still and up :)

I will be back soon...sorry for this 'SICK' post! Will get back with something exciting :)
See You Soon

Dance of Life

Do you like baseball (nut)? No, I don't mean the game...it's an ice cream flavour :)
Now I know that I haven't tasted a lot of flavours since I started Ice Cream Inspirations... I have played safe by having over & over again the same flavours... I need to be a lil more adventurous. I have indeed tried & tasted a few leaving my comfort zone like Pralines & Cream, Gold Medal ribbon, Jamoca, etc & few names I have forgotten!!!!

Baseball nut from Baskin Robbins

This week the flavour for painting is Baseball nut which has vanilla & black raspberry...the two colours that are to be used for our creation...so here's a lady in a trance dancing to the mystic tune or rhythm of life surrounding her and engulfing & imbibing  her somewhere deep into the cosmos...to be one with the Creator, the Master Musician.

Dance of Life - 7x10inches, Acrylics

I really hope you can see the vanilla colours...it's more creamy in person. So are you dancing too to the cosmic tune :)

3x6inches each
These are two bookmarks with the same baseball nut colours:) Anyone interested in using it...go ahead...print it on a card stock, punch a hole on top, add a ribbon or string & it's ready to use.

Pond Park

It's been a busy week... Lady in Red reached it's rightful owner and am super glad that my lovely client, Mrs. Mini Sunil, loved it :) I met one of college mate, my dear buddy, after a span of 5 years!!! I was excited to the core, She is a mom of two lovely daughters and I was meeting her second daughter for the very first time. It was great to meet them all :)

The challenge for this week is Mint Chocolate chips in Summer of Colors - Ice Cream Inspirations. I tried something Asian... just two colours here...Mint green & chocolate brown!

Pond Park, Acrylics, 5x7 inches

There is a Pond Park near our place and the name has always made me to imagine some fantastic things. There are no ducks in there but it's a beautiful place for a walk or for kids to spend some play time. I don't get to go there often but when ever I visit I really feel rejuvenated. They have some lovely flower beds there...I can smell them right now :)

Last minute addition...here are two digital ATCs (Artist Trading Cards). You can find more of ATCs here, here & here :)

Rainbow Sherbet

Thank you Blogadda

The Summer of Color 2 has officially started! Week One - Rainbow Sherbet!
I love the sound of the flavour...haven't had it yet...I think it would be yummy:)
We have been asked to paint with four colours essentially - Orange, yellow, pink and white with the dab of any other colour if it is necessary. I have used only the four colours mentioned... It has been a great experience to experiment with limited colours. To narrow down the choices and yet to come up with something beautiful gives a high feel. I believe, it is such challenges that makes one a better artist. Thanks Kristin for hosting this wonderful Challenge :)
This is what formed in my mind on hearing the prompt; so what do you think of it? Have you had your share of rainbow sherbet???? In case any one wishes to join us, feel free and link it up here. If you wish more on the Challenge, read here.

Jamini Roy has been one of my greatest inspirations for quite sometime now. So here's the beautiful lady draped in a red saree. What do think about the background? Do let me know how you find her...:)

Dancer

Art forms whether it be dance, music, theatre or fine arts interests me. I have been in dance team in my school and college. A few times I have been in group music too. I never really had the opportunity to learn any of this in a proper manner I had the most supportive of parents though :) At times, I get into it so much that I even dream about it. My daughter has a talent for arts as well especially dance and I have enrolled her in a classical dance class. This is an inspiration from such experiences. I had seen some contemporary dance form in the newspaper or so long back, recently it just hit me in one such dream and this is the result!

This is an abstract form and it does give me the liberty to experiment. All my abstracts are intuitive. I have started enjoying this kind of procedure and have been doing it some of other forms too except the traditional form. Maybe it will creep into it soon....Please do give me your valuable feedback.
