Illustration with Gond Art - Panchatantra Retold

I have been busy with a couple of projects...very dear to me and I will be giving a sneak peek too, my friends on one of them :)

It has been an enriching experience for me as I did really go through some intense research on the art form, bought a couple of books for the same and I did enjoy it as I happened to grow and evolve, personally speaking.

The art form I am speaking here is Gond Art from Madhya Pradhesh. Again, it's a tribal art form featuring nature and the nuances between man and nature. It's an exciting art form like any folk art in that we get and tend to be a child...child-like! I enjoy the part when you draw with your heart and not with your brain demanding technical skills in this and that. Missed to mention that it very much reminds me Australian Aboriginal art. Jasmine Bheda of NaishArt Publishers from Pune wanted me to illustrate the famous Panchatantra stories (two of them) in the Gond art style. I just completed the project and off it has been sent to Jasmine. Now, I am eagerly waiting for the published copy :)

Now, the books I bought for some research and enlightenment are:

 Signature:Patterns in Gond Art is an amazing book by Tara Publishers and it showcases the works of established as well as emerging artists in the field of Gond art. Each page is a colorful vision of the intricate patterns and designs followed in the art form. It is a work of intense beauty and should be added to the collection of any folk artist.

In this book, Charu Smitha Gupta, talks about the artistic past; it's evolution, the waning and the incredible resurgence of the varied folk art forms.

Both the books are a good read as far any folk art enthusiast is concerned. Love Signature more for it's stunning pictures.

Celebrating the Joy of Giving

It is that time of the year when our homes would be lit within multi-coloured and stone-studded diyas of all shapes, sizes and kinds, when every heart would dance to the rhythm of the firecrackers, load up all possible delis...walking to and fro and roam around within accentuating fragrance of brand new dresses :)

Any festival is associated with giving...love, affection, care, compassion, time or something material...any form of giving...that's the beauty and essence of festivals. Trying to spread the joy of giving here at Hues n Shades :D

I am celebrating with a Giveaway of one of my latest artworks. It is a Cherial* painting and a reproduction of the work by the Folk artist, Madhu from Andra Pradesh. An amazing artist!!! I had bought the artwork from him in one of the Tribal Camps held in Ahalia Heritage Village. I loved it and wanted to try it out, I am happy about the outcome :) My first attempt at Cherial, another folk art...!

The art is a miniature work - 13x13 cms. I just LOVE miniature works!!!

*Cherial painting is from Cherial Village in Warangal District of Andra Pradesh. It was a from of entertainment in earlier days - before the advent of technology - when people sought to story-telling with painted scrolls much like the Pata painting of Orissa and West Bengal. The stories are usually from mythology, puranas, legends and local tales. Cherial, however, also includes tales of everyday life of local village folks. It is restricted to Telengana region and is a dying art. The size varies from a miniature one to several feet long portrayals.

Watercolour Poppies and Blue Ridge Mountains

Two weeks flew by without being able to post my 'usual Fridays'...It was hectic here with my daughter's Arangettam (first dance performance under the Guru's guidance), participating in an Art and Craft Fair, my health taking a down-spin and my hubby's visit (which was exciting as we took a tour...a traditional one...down the lane through centuries...which will be featured here soon!!!) to attend our daughter's performance. I will share some pictures in the next post...need to organize a few of things first!

A few days back I tried a couple of  YouTube tutorials which I would like to share here. One was a floral and the other a landscape. 

The first one by Joanna Boon Thomas and here's what she demonstrates in her video tutorial. The best part of it was that it was an exclusive mom-daughter exploration...we both tried our hand at it :)
