Happy Vishu

Vishu marks the New Year in accordance with the Malayalam calendar. Vishu starts with Vishukani which means the first sight after waking up. It consists of a ritual arrangement of raw rice, fresh fruits, golden cucumber, coins, our traditional dress, gold jewelery, mirror, golden shower all placed in a bell shaped bronze vessel in front of Lord Krishna with the lamp lighted. Actually we walk with our eyes closed to this arrangement and open our eyes to see it the first thing in the early hours of dawn. It is supposed to bring us prosperity the whole year through.  Back home firecrackers are burst with great fervour which we lack here.

Vishukani - Watercolour, 10x7 inches

Wishing all my dear friends a very happy, peaceful, prosperous and a safe Vishu, Tamil New Year, Baisakhi and everyone else celebrating their New Year :)
